Crochet a Fanciful Flamingo Basket (Free Crochet Pattern)

The flamingo is a social bird that will add color and charm to your bath or anywhere you need a basket to collect your things (like a current yarn project). This crocheted basket is a superb organizer, whether you appliqué the flamingo onto it or not.

What you will need:

RED HEART® Super Saver®:
1 skein each of 313 Aran A, 512 Turqua B, 505 Aruba Sea C, 706 Perfect Pink D, 718 Shocking Pink E, and 312 Black F

Susan Bates® Crochet Hook:
6mm [US J-10] and 4mm [US G-6]

Yarn needle
GAUGE: 10 sc = 4" [10 cm]; 7 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Basket stitch using larger hook and two strands of yarn held together. CHECK YOUR

GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.


Basket measures 10" [25.5 cm] diameter x 12" [30.5 cm] tall.

NOTES
Basket is worked in joined rounds using larger hook and two strands of yarn held together throughout. Flamingo is worked back and forth in rows with smaller hook and single strand of yarn. Flamingo is sewn on to right side of Basket.

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
Bpdc: (back post double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from back to front then to back, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice. Skip st in front of the Bpdc.

Fpdc: (front post double crochet) Yarn over, insert hook from front to back then to front, going around post of indicated st, draw up a loop, [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice. Skip st behind the Fpdc.

sc2tog: [Draw up a loop in next st] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

BASKET
Beginning at center bottom, with two strands of A held together and larger hook, ch 4.

Round 1: Work 11 dc in 4th ch from hook, slip st in top of skipped ch-3 – 12 dc (skipped ch-3 counts as dc).

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in same st as join, 2 dc in each dc around, slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 24 dc.

Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in next dc, [dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc] 11 times,slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 36 dc.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, [dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc] 11 times, slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 48 dc.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, [dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc] 11 times, slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 60 dc.

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next sc, [dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc] 11 times, slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 72 dc.

Round 7: Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc in same st as join, sc n each dc around, slip st in first sc.

Shape Sides
Round 8: Ch 1, working in back loops of Round 6, sc in each sc around, slip st in first sc.

Round 9: Ch 3, dc in each sc around, slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 10: Ch 3, Bpdc around next 2 dc, Fpdc around next 3 dc, [Bpdc around next 3 dc, Fpdc around next 3 dc] around, slip st in top of beginning ch-3.

Round 11: Ch 3, Fpdc around next 2 dc, Bpdc around next 3 dc, [Fpdc around next 3 dc, Bpdc around next 3 dc] around, change to two stands of C held together and slip st in top of beginning ch-3. Cut A.

Round 12: With C, ch 3 and repeat Round 10.

Round 13: Repeat Round 11.

Rounds 14-27: Repeat Rounds 10-11, change to two strands of B held together in last st of last round. Cut C.

Round 28: With B, repeat Round 10.

Rounds 29-30: Repeat Rounds 10-11.

Round 31: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, sc in each dc around, slip st in first sc.

Shape Handles
Round 32: Ch 20, slip st in same st as last slip st, turn, slip st in each of 20 ch just made, slip st in next 35 sc, ch 20, slip st in same sc as last slip st, turn, slip st in each of 20 ch just made, slip st in remaining 35 sc, slip st in first slip st. Fasten off.


FLAMINGO
Beak and Head
With smaller hook and one strand of F, ch 2.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook – 1 sc.

Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in sc – 2 sc.

Rows 3-6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across. Cut F.

Row 7: Change to E, ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next 2 sc – 4 sc.

Row 8: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc – 6 sc.

Rows 9-10: Change to D, ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Shape Neck
Row 11: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 4 sc, sc2tog – 5 sc.

Row 12: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc – 4 sc.

Row 13: Ch 1, turn, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog – 3 sc.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in each sc across – 6 sc.

Rows 4-6: Ch 1, turn, sc in each sc across.

Row 7: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, sc2tog.

Row 8: Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc – 5 sc.

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in next sc. [sc2tog] twice. Fasten off, leaving long end for sewing.


FINISHING
Following photo, sew Wing on Flamingo. With F, embroider a French knot eye on Face. Pin Flamingo in place on the front center of Basket and sew in place.

Bent Leg
With F, ch 25. Fasten off.
